Distology's European ambitions will be won or lost on hiring

New private equity backing gives Distology the funds to become a European security distributor, with Germany next. Money opens markets. People make them work.

Specialist security distributor Distology has a new backer. Foresight Group has acquired the business from NorthEdge, which had supported it since February 2021, and co-founder and CEO Hayley Roberts has been clear about what comes next. "We want to be a European VAD," she told MicroScope, adding that "acquisition is going to be a massive part of our journey."

Under NorthEdge, Distology delivered a 48% EBITDA compound annual growth rate in the two years to FY26 and acquired Squareball in 2022. Germany looks like the next geographic priority after the UK and Benelux, and buying another distributor is on the table. Roberts also wants to invest in AI to make the business more efficient and more relevant to partners.

What it means for talent

Entering Germany is a hiring project first

A value-added distributor sells expertise as much as product. Entering Germany means finding a country leader with the right vendor and partner relationships, technical pre-sales people who can support resellers in German, and vendor managers who can convince security vendors to sign up in a new territory. Those people are few, well known to each other, and usually well looked after by their current employers.

The order matters. The first hire, typically a country manager, shapes every hire after it. Getting that one wrong tends to cost a year.

Buy-and-build brings integration work

If Distology does buy another distributor, it will inherit a team, a culture and probably some overlap in roles. Integration leaders, and managers who can bring two sets of vendor relationships together without losing any, become critical. So does retaining the acquired business's key account and vendor people through the change.

Competitors will be watching both ways

A well-funded buyer in the specialist security space makes staff at smaller European security distributors attractive targets. At the same time, rivals may see a change of ownership as a chance to approach Distology's own people. Even positive change unsettles some.

AI changes the roles, not just the systems

Investing in AI to become more efficient usually means rethinking roles in operations, quoting and partner support. The businesses that handle this well are open with their teams about how jobs will change, and re-skill people rather than simply replacing them.

What to do now

If you're a distributor planning European expansion: hire the country leader before you build the office. Look for someone whose vendor relationships travel with them, and check references with partners, not just former employers.

If you're a specialist distributor that could be a target: know who your critical people are and make sure they know their future. Uncertainty drives more departures than any competitor offer.

If you're a vendor: new distribution in Germany or Europe often means new faces managing your business. Get to know them early.

For everyone in distribution: vendor managers and technical pre-sales specialists with security experience are about to become more sought after. If you have good ones, now is the time to review whether their packages still reflect the market.
